Azin Yousefiani is a visual artist originally from Iran, Kurdistan, currently based in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her MFA degree from Georgia State University’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design in 2025. Before that, she earned an MA in Painting from the University of Tehran in 2019 and a BA in Painting from the University of Guilan in 2016. She teaches various courses, including Drawing, 2D Design, and Printmaking, at GSU. Her work has been featured in national and international exhibitions, reflecting her diverse practice in painting, printmaking, papermaking, and interdisciplinary approaches.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I explore my cultural identity as a new resident in the United States using printmaking, handmade paper, fabric, mixed media, and collage. I delve into my shifting identity from my hometown, Kurdistan, Iran, to this new environment by searching for a new visual language. My artworks juxtapose different forms and concepts regarding my cultural identity, in which a part of me is always missing, like a fragment of an ancient object. Misinterpretation, separation, lack of intimacy, and mistranslation in an unfamiliar world have inspired a language for me to examine the new parts of my identity.
In my work, I use reimagined patterns drawn from ancient Iranian motifs, rugs, textiles, and fabrics alongside patterns I encounter in my new environment. I often combine printed surfaces with handmade paper collages. I am drawn to the tension between repetition and variation, where an image can remain recognizable while changing through each iteration. Handmade paper has been especially meaningful to me as a fragile material connected to memory and trace. More recently, I have opened my work up to more narrative possibilities, with figures that exist in uncertain spaces and resist fixed identities, between spaces of transformation and becoming.
